With this project I’m documenting the diversity of people of African origin within my generation who are living in Holland.
This means that I'm photographing people who are born in the 80's and 90's and that can trace their heritage back to an African country.
I’m photographing this because I noticed that there's a perception of people who have African roots.
I used to have a certain image of what it means to have African roots as well.
Over the years I've come in contact with many people who have African roots and I noticed that my perception was wildly inaccurate.
With this project I hope to at least show that having African roots doesn’t need to have a specific meaning, even though the world seems to impose meaning on it.
I have African roots myself (I’m from Curacao) and I noticed that we in the Caribbean seem to have our own variation (or spin-off) of black culture and this shows in the way we look, the way we dress, and our names.
I don't consider this good or bad, it's just different.
